Left 4 Dead Critic’s Choice Edition, DLC and SDK Details Revealed

February 5, 2009, 10:47 am – Alden Kroll – Press Release

Valve’s Zombie Thriller Expanding In 2009

February 5, 2008 — Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Half-Life, Portal, Team Fortress, and Counter-Strike) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced a series of content and development releases for its latest title, 2008’s best-selling new game property for the PC and Xbox 360, Left 4 Dead (L4D).

The first L4D DLC — dubbed the L4D Survival Pack — is due for release this spring and introduces a new multiplayer game mode entitled, Survival, plus two complete campaigns for Versus Mode . A Critic’s Choice Edition of the game will be heading to retail stores this spring, and will include access to all the content introduced in the L4D: Survival Pack.

In addition, for PC gamers and aspiring developers, the first Left 4 Dead release for the Source Software Development Kit (Source SDK) will allow the creation of custom Left 4 Dead campaigns that will be discoverable via L4D’s matchmaking system. The SDK update is also due for release this spring, and is free of charge to all owners of L4D on the PC.

“Since Half-Life launched in 1998, Valve has made continuous efforts to expand the offering of its products beyond what’s included on the day of launch,” said Gabe Newell, co-founder and president of Valve. “With Half-Life and Counter-Strike, and more recently Team Fortress 2, we’ve learned that we’re no longer making stand-alone games but creating entertainment services. With Left 4 Dead we’re extending that tradition by creating additional gameplay and releasing our internal tools to aspiring developers so they may also create and distribute new Left 4 Dead experiences.”

Left 4 Dead is a survival action game from Valve that blends the social entertainment experience of multiplayer games such as Counter-Strike and Team Fortress with the dramatic, narrative experience made popular in single player action game classics such as the Half-Life series of games. Released in November of 2008, L4D has earned over 25 industry awards from outlets around the world.

More Left for Dead Playermade Campaigns

Posted by Roogle under games, left 4 dead on 30 Nov 2008

looks like more and more people are creating drafts for left 4 dead campaigns.

On L4dmods.com are a few listed.

To start off there is  the map salmar theatre witch is created by Ajax:

This map was being built for Zombie Panic as an objective map. It is based on a section of street near my home. It was meant to be played in 15min rounds. I’m currently giving it an overhaul for L4D. Most of the models and textures in the screens are from ZPS, so they have been removed and are being replaced with L4D content. Lighting is still WIP..well, everyhting is really…it’s my first map with Hammer. The story/objectives are set up like this (I may tweak them if they don’t work with L4D):

Since the SDK hasnt been fully released but there are hacks out there that allow for play the final of the map might take some time before it comes out  but that are just my 2 cents.
Ajax  also created a small story for the map to get you in the “mood”

You have just finished a weekend zombie movie marathon at the old Salmar Classic theater. As you exit the theater on Sunday afternoon, you find the movie surround sound had drowned out the infection outbreak in the streets outside. You must first find a radio to call for help (I used a logic case to spawn it in a random location). From the radio, you are instructed to get to the roof of the apartment across the street for evac. The apartments are on back-up power with only emergency/natural lighting. The door to the roof is electronically locked and must be over-ridden…you are sent to the security sever in the basement. Damn thing needs a keycard before you can get access (another case logic randomly spawns the card in one of the apartments). Once you have the card, the server must reboot…wait 2 minutes for a randomly generated 3 digit code (more logic fun here) to be displayed on the screen (figured this would keep you from knowing what to use to open the door every round). Get up to the roof and punch the code in to open the door. I was thinking on having the helicopter only wait for a couple minutes…if you are not there in time…well, then you are “left 4 dead”.

As you can see from the text there is going to be some scripted events in there that should make it intresting but sadly also static. here are some images to complete the view of the map.

And there is the second one by Yama  he has produced some shots and a rough storyline on what happands in the campaign.

1 – tourist centre. The players start at the bottom of the mountain, and move up into a tourist centre, which will have a museum, cafes, shops etc, which leads into a hiking trail. There’ll be a few cabins along the way, otherwise the 2nd half is mostly just woodland, before a road leading to…

2 – the temple complex. Not much to say other than there’ll be temples. Survivors just follow the paths, with a few shops or other enterable buildings along the way. When they get to the main shine (the huge temple in the screenshots), I want a crescendo event but can’t think of anything yet. After that, they go into the woods and find a tunnel leading to a cablecar station, and take the cable car up the mountain, but it breaks down near a maintenance station, which doubles as a saferoom.

3 – The power has cut out, so someone needs to go down the lift and through the dark tunnels to get to the generator room, while the other 3 stay and defend against a hoard of zombies (if I put the saferoom after this, then that can be map #2’s crescendo event). I’m also not sure if this would work if bots are on your team (they seem to teleport over to you if you get too far away), and the lone-player might get swarmed, so I might have to have all 4 go down the lift.

Anyway, once the power’s back on, they carry on up to the top ropeway station, and after more woodland, they come to a small mining village (also in the screens) which has been derelict for a few decades. Humans have to go through a school, and then into a few mine buildings/shacks. I might include another crescendo event here where the survivors go into the mine itself, and alert the zombies by calling the lift back to the surface.

4 – Once out of the mine, the survivors follow a road to a decaying spa/hotel. This is more closed-quarters, with narrow corridors, bars, hotel rooms, baths etc, but some bigger areas like halls and dining areas.

5 – I’m not sure yet what the finale will be. It’ll either be the roof of the hotel, where the survivors finally get above the trees and have to hold off until they’re rescued, or a construction site that was abandoned years ago and has the empty foundations of another hotel. I’ll decided which one I go with when the map is closer to being finished.

So that’s the plan I’ve got so far, and I have parts of all the maps done, but I need the SDK to get the maps playing properly ingame before I can put everything together and see how the map plays.

seems that Yama his campaign is going to be quite intresting  it seems to have a asian theme witch becomes clear when looking at the screenshots. eventough most of these screens are in early development it looks promising. for more info about the campaign click here.
